Glass Etching

I have been trying to get out and shoot photos with my new xsi when I am not at work or doing school related things. Being on spring break, I was able to take a couple days and head back to my hometown for a little R&R and “thinking time”. During my mini-vacation, I stopped over to the Stained Glass Cabinet Company in Acme. The store is owned by my Uncle Scott and they do awesome art glass and truly unique pieces. If you are ever in the area stop in and check them out and tell ‘em Lance sent you.

The glass etching is done on a stone wheel that has been around for over a century. Co-owner Richard Bruening handles the etching and cranks out some beautiful art. Here’s a couple shots of Rich in action.

A New Hobby

So I have ventured into a new hobby. I have been interested in photography and taking pictures since I was a little kid. Photography is a very cool form of art, not completely created, but not completely as-is either (if you know what I am saying). My uncle is a great sports photographer and I got to play around with shooting some promo pictures for my fiance’s mom’s store at Christmastime with his camera.

So, in light of a new project I am looking to dive into, I purchased a camera last week. It is a Canon Rebel XSi 450D with an 18-55mm IS lens. Soon it will have a few additions including a battery grip and a 70-200 lens, and a 50mm f/1.8 after that.

I am looking forward into jumping into this endeavor head first and can’t wait to see what pictures I end up with.

Passion

pas⋅sion [pash-uhn]: a strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything: a passion for music.

What is your passion? When I was young I had many of different interests: biking, Legos, hunting with my dad, and others, but my passion became evident when I got older. At 15 years old my best friend and I decided we wanted to start a DJ company. Over the span of 3 to 4 years, DJing, and building the DJ business, became an absolute passion of mine. I would spend hours and hours studying, working on logos, websites, music libraries, promotions, and ideas. I thought about it constantly. The outcome of this passion was building one of the top DJing companies in the area, with some very prestigious clients on our books.

As with many things go, passion can wain after a while. Over the last year I have notices a decrease in my level of passion. Overall, I guess I have seen a decrease in passion across the board. Why the change? A number of things attest to it I suppose. I have let my weight come back after losing over 40 pounds, I was stressed due to an overload of projects going on in my life, I let my spiritual life slip to the lowest it has been since I became a Christian, and overall, I was just in a real slump. Granted, there were some awesome things that happened over the last year: I got engaged to the most beautiful woman on earth, she and I spent a month traveling across the country, and I entered my final year of undergrad.

What I have come to realize is, no matter what you feel like is getting you down, stay faithful. Trust to God all that he has bestowed upon you. Realize that today is the day, because only God knows if, tomorrow will exist or not.

So do not worry about tomorrow;

for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 6:34

Find your passion, and run with it. Thankfully, I have a wonderful wife-to-be who supports my ideas (no matter how crazy they are). I have been really praying about what God’s direction is in my life and am really starting to find my passion again.

An Exciting New Year

I have realized that I am really horrible at keeping a consistant blog schedule. I have quite a few posts I would like to put together and I plan to really begin to hone my writing skills and continually post them over the course of the year. Let’s see if this really happens or not.

So, welcome to 2010! A new year, a new decade, and a year of change ahead. 2010 holds graduation, career hunting, and a wedding to my beautiful wife-to-be. I cannot wait to see how this upcoming year unfolds.

I do not believe in New Year’s resolutions. To make changes, real life changes are required, not just “resolutions for the year”. I do have some goals that I am working towards over the next semester. Here’s my list for life changes I am working towards in my life:

  • Strengthening my relationship with God
  • Eating healthier (cooking more at home) and starting an exercise routine
  • Reading more
  • Spending less money on superfluous things
  • Spend more time with my Wife-to-Be
  • Find my passion
  • Get organized and reduce clutter
  • Work on my personal portfolio

The list may seem like a lot, but I am already making significant steps on a couple of these life changes. I’m hoping to use this blog as part of my personal portfolio and work on my writing skills to strengthen myself in this area.

So let’s pour a glass of wine and toast to the new year. To health, happiness, and friends, here’s to 2010.

A sight to be seen

A sight to be seen

This is a picture Chelsea took of me while we were hiking out in the Badlands of South Dakota. The Badlands were one of our favorite places we hiked on our month long voyage. Definitely a sight to be seen. We traveled through the Badlands, into the Black Hills, over to Yellowstone, down through the Grand Tetons, Across the Rockies, and finally across the plains.

Photographs can’t do it justice. I wished I would have had a DSLR with a telephoto so I could have gotten some even better pictures over the course of our travels, but even then, it’s nothing like seeing it in person.

These sights put a lot into perspective for me. Seeing the beauty of nature and the mountains, to me it strengthened my faith. To me, the mountains symbolize God pushing the earth towards the heavens and the sheer beauty of His creation. The difficulty of reaching the summit symbolizes the struggle we have aligning our vision for our lives with the vision God has for us.

So many times, we shield our eyes from the beauty that surrounds us. If we took just a minute to stop and look around, we might see the world in a completely different light. Next time you are feeling the stresses of the world pushing in on you, stop and look. It may just save you.

What is AOL (oops Aol.) Thinking?

AOL_Brand_Identity

(Graphic: Business Wire)

The news of AOL’s new logo and transition from AOL to Aol. is quickly making its rounds on the internet. After its spinoff from Time Warner, AOL is launching a new logo which can be seen above.

New logo? Really? Text over an image constitutes as a logo? I honestly believe that it took longer to write out the invoice for that logo than it actually did to create.

For me personally, AOL represents a time passed. When the name AOL comes to mind, it has nothing to do with new age media, social networking, or the fast moving world we live in now. What comes to mind is a bygone era, when we had to dial in to the internet, the beeps and chirps of dial-up modems, the mailboxes full of AOL 1000 free hour CDs, and the infamous “You’ve got Mail”.

So does AOL really think a logo change is going to redefine their place on the web today? It won’t. The last AOL product I used was AIM, and facebook chat, twitter and gmail have put that into the pile of unused apps on my computer.

Will this change make people stop using Aol? No. Will it attract new people to Aol? Maybe just to see how horrible the design actually is.

In order to really compete, AOL will have to undergo a complete transformation, not just a logo change. In most 20 somethings to 30 somethings, they are simply thought of “as your father’s internet”.

5 People I Most Admire and Why

1) Warren Buffett for his business savvy and ability to be content with a simple life even though he has the means to be able to have anything in the world he could ever want.

2) Blake Mycoskie for his mission work through starting one of my favorite companies, TOMS shoes. He saw a need in the world and started a company to fulfill that need.

3) Dr. Robert and Helen Lee, two of the most giving individuals in the Tri-Cities area. They help students pay for their education costs (me being one of their beneficiaries). They gave me the desire to become financially stable enough to pay it forward.

4) Robert Kiyosaki for his amazing business sense and his books that help people realize their true potential beyond working for someone else for the rest of their lives.

5) Theodore Roosevelt for his commitment to nature conservation, and for the creation of the National Parks Service. He worked to protect millions of acres of land in this country for the enjoyment of generations to come.

Having Mentors in Your Life

One who refuses to seek the advice of others will eventually be led to a path of ruin. A mentor helps you to perceive your own weaknesses and confront them with courage. The bond between mentor and protégé enables us to stay true to our chosen path until the very end.
-Buddhist Philosopher Daisaku Ikeda

I believe that mentors are one of the most powerful tools a young individual, especially a budding entrepreneur can have. A great book on this subject is one written by famed actor Denzel Washington titled, A Hand to Guide Me .

When I first started my company when I was a mere 15 years old, I strived to surround myself with successful people. My father was a very successful individual in the community, holding the positions of both Chief of Police and Village Manager. He knew everyone, and I always had someone watching me. It is definitely different growing up in a small town where you are almost in the spotlight your whole young life.

There was a small Italian joint in the town I grew up in called Rocco’s. It had great food and the best cheesecake you’ve ever tasted. It was owned by two great people, Joe and Marian. Every Monday night following the village council meeting, the ‘big wigs’ of the community would meet up at Rocco’s. It was a group of about 6-8 individuals, including my father. Every “Boy’s Night” as they would call it, they invited my business partner and I along, and we would always join them. Our friends questioned us all the time saying “Why are you going to hang out with your dad and a bunch of old guys?”. They were always out playing video games or other activities. I would always respond, “Because these are the people I want to be like when I grow up.”

I learned so much on those Monday nights in that little restaurant. From life lessons, to business lessons, and more. I know that if I ever needed advice on a business endeavor, I could call any of those guys up and get their input. I hung out with those guys because I understood the value of real life experience. They had been in the trenches, succeeded and failed, and got up and tried again. Some were influential because of the positions they held, while some were very successful business owners. I would consider all of these individuals mentors to myself and my business partner, because they took the time to take us under their wing and teach us what they knew.

I think everyone needs to reach out to those around them who have been successful. People who you see yourself wanting to be like in your later years. Most people will feel honored if you just ask them about their experiences and many are so full of stories, knowledge, and tips, that their are just itching for a young grasshopper to tell them to. Many people are scared to ask because they feel that no one will give away secrets, but you would be surprised how many are more than willing to share. Many successful people were once that young grasshopper and had someone reach out to them.

I would highly suggest reading Denzel’s collection of stories from numerous people telling about their experiences with mentors in their life. I definitely got a lot out of hearing other’s stories.

Welcome to Lance Hill.org

Welcome everyone. Let me introduce myself:

My name is Lance Hill and I am a Michigan native. Michigan is a beautiful place to live with beautiful landscapes, lakes, rivers with great opportunities to hunt, fish, boat, snowboard/ski, and more. I moved from the Traverse City area down to the Saginaw/Bay City area to attend Saginaw Valley State University and I am beginning to realize how much we take advantage of the beauty of Northern Michigan.

Currently I am in my Senior graduating in May 2010 with a BBA in Marketing with a minor in Entrepreneurship. I have been always been fascinated with the idea of being my own boss and running companies. At 15 years old I started my first company, Sound Bytes Entertainment, which my business partner and I have molded into one of the top sound, lighting, and DJing providers in Northern Michigan.

I am not sure how you landed here, where you came from, or your motive, but welcome to my personal blog. Why do I have a blog you may ask? A blog can help you establish your little corner of a very large internet. I’m hoping this will help me expand my writing skills, connect with people, and expand on my views on marketing, advertising, Faith, humanity, social projects, and such, more that twitter and facebook can. Speaking of twitter and facebook, my profiles are located to your right, so feel free to check out my feed or add me as a friend on facebook.

So welcome to my little corner of the internet. I hope I can be informative, or at least opinionated for you.
